Cash App, Tags2025–2026

A new wayto pay.

Cash App Tags are tap-to-pay accessories, a payment form factor that didn't exist before. I championed them for years and led the design architecture: the financial model, the lifecycle and the safeguards.

Role
Lead and only designer on the Card surface. I designed the architecture, then brought on two designers to help with the customer-facing UI.
Scope
Financial model, tag and token lifecycle, security and spending safeguards, per-tag themes and 3D models, the launch.
Proves
Lead unasked. See the system. Make it physical.

Hours.

How long the first Wand drop lasted.

Launched June 4, 2026 · flagship of Cash App's spring release

01, OriginFrom pitch to roadmap

Three wandsbefore a roadmap.

Physical tags started as one of my early pitches on the Card team. The idea went through three versions of the wand before it made the roadmap, and the groundwork on states and constraints was underway before the project was staffed, so the team could move fast once it was.

Only Cash App could make this cool.

A legacy bank could ship the same hardware, branding and marketing and still miss. Gen Z already trusts Cash App's taste, so a payment could be fashion first.

02, ArchitectureEvery state, twice

Lost, found,handed over.

Every card state needed a tag twin. With engineering, I cataloged how account, identity, shipping and eligibility states intersect, so the card and its tags could never disagree.

  • Identity in manual review
  • Card shipping
  • Teen awaiting sponsorship
  • Locked by a parent
  • Card art not approved
  • Card expiring
  • Afterpay active
  • At limit, overdue or ineligible
  • Multiple shipments and activations
  • Lost, reprovisioned by a stranger, reported lost again

Fashion first. Still a payment card.

For a trend-conscious Gen Z audience, we were upfront about the serious parts, not buried in settings.

03, CraftYears of groundwork, in one object

Everything I'd built,in one object.

Each tag has its own theme, from the card themes I championed, and its own 3D model, from the 3D card that became the hero of Cash App's home screen.

Hundreds of prototypes. One survivor.

How money, cards and tags relate is a spatial question, so I answered it in motion. I championed a vertical wallet; the team chose a horizontal one, and I cosigned it.

04, LaunchThe constraint became the strategy

Make the constraintthe launch.

Tags need a card first, and new cards take days to arrive. So we launched to existing cardholders and released tags in waves, behind a waitlist.

I built the house, then brought in help.

I designed the architecture, the framing, plumbing and electrical. Then I brought on two designers to help with the customer-facing UI and guided them, because the surface was mine to own.

The magic neededa foundation.

It's rare to work on a new payment category, and rarer to champion one for years before it has a sponsor. A financial model, a lifecycle and a set of safeguards let it ship on a hard date.
